Pocket Prayers for Work compiled by Mark Greene.
CHP 2004 ISBN 97807 15140222

This little book of 100 prayers is a delightful mixture of traditional and contemporary prayers related to the world of work. It is a deceptive volume because whilst it is easy to read right through fairly quickly, it has hidden depths. It's sections make it easy to use and I found a great deal of inspiration in the prayers, which are mainly written by ordinary folk including school children, carers and volunteers. They range from the poetic to text speak, covering all aspects of work. When reading them we are reminded that there are many ways to pray and many things to pray about, some of which, like me, the readers will have no experience of themselves.

The collection contains some one-liners which feel almost like mottos, one being "Silently during Meetings" by Jeremy Harbinson which I will certainly use. There are others which are almost meditations as "Just Between You and Me" by Mark Greene. The congregational prayer section contains some useful resources for preachers. Many others have inspired me to write my own prayers and to contemplate on areas and issues of work which I hadn't given much thought to before. The prayer which I found the most thought provoking is "Doing things differently" by Anne-Marie Greene (Yr 2). I will certainly be using these prayers again in both my personal prayer life and as a local preacher and would recommend it for anyone.

Website reviews

Pray as you go is a website by Ignatiatian Jesuits. You can download a daily MP3 or listen at your computer.

A new prayer session is produced every day.  It is not a 'Thought for the Day', a sermon or a bible-study, but rather a framework for your own prayer.

Lasting between ten and thirteen minutes, it combines music, scripture and some questions for reflection.  The aim is to help you to:

  • become more aware of God's presence in your life
  • listen to and reflect on God's word
  • grow in your relationship with God.

It is produced by Jesuit Media Initiatives, with material written by a number of British Jesuits and other experts in the spirituality of St Ignatius of Loyola.

Although the content is different every day, it keeps to the same basic format.

"Pray as you go has been a life saver to me. I love the way it redeems the iPod for the glory of God. It helps the lectionary scriptures connect to my life in the most powerful ways. I like the music. It drives me nuts that they don't give chapter and verse references, but I this does encourage me to get my bible out and search for it myself. I have shared it with other and they have thanked me for the connection."

Prayer mate - quiet time organiser app

It's fairly easy to use but takes a while to set up. It has the flexibility to allow you categorise and so makes sure that the whole of life is represented. It is very relevant and I found it very useful as it has a alarm to remind me to pray. The only draw back is that it does rely on you inputting info and therefore having the knowledge for full being prayer.

I would recommend it.
