Energy buying

It's time to save

The Methodist Church, in conjunction with 2buy2, is now able to offer central energy purchasing for Connexional properties - churches, halls etc. This is a great way to both save money and cut our carbon footprint.

The Hope in God's Future report commits the Methodist Church to reducing our carbon footprint by 80% by 2050. The energy used to light and heat our buildings is one of the biggest contributors to our carbon footprint, and also one of our biggest expenses. We spend millions each year on energy. If we could save just 10% of that, it frees up huge sums for mission and to invest in our buildings to further reduce energy consumption - saving even more money and carbon in the future.

Frequently asked questions

Why should we do this?
We believe that by using the contracts managed by 2buy2, Methodist churches can significantly reduce the amount of time and money they spend on their energy buying. Working in partnership with 2buy2 also enables us to benefit from links with other denominations including the Church of England and Church in Wales helping us all to be better stewards of our resources.
So you can save money, save time and save the planet.

What is the Renewable Energy Group Buying Initiative?

2buy2, working in partnership with our approved supplier Good Energy, are offering a one year fixed renewable energy contract to Methodist churches. The idea is simple - sign up for one year on a fixed-rate electricity tariff, safe in the knowledge that you're buying 100% renewable energy.  Depending on how much you use, your church can even buy gas through their dual fuel option as well. Some of the proceeds from this go towards helping people who generate their own renewable heat.

We think this way to buy energy represents a good opportunity to work towards a carbon reduction strategy for your church, and potentially save money too! Buying as a group allows Good Energy to offer discounted pricing ensuring that you get value for money. Plus, it gives you a chance to work together with other Methodist churches across the UK in order to help achieve these savings. The more churches that sign up, the better the Initiative will be, helping to reach our target of reducing the Church's carbon footprint by 80%. If you are interested in learning about how you can switch to green energy and reduce the cost of doing so then contact 2buy2 on the details below. You must register your interest in the Initiative by 21st October 2013.

What about standard energy?

Alongside the desire to promote the use of green energy we recognise that many churches are focussed on achieving the lowest cost possible for their energy. In response to this, the Connexional Team, in conjunction with 2buy2, are looking to develop an energy basket which will help churches to reduce their costs and take the stress out of purchasing energy. We had originally hoped to be in a position to run the basket this year. We have now taken the decision to delay the launch until October 2014 to ensure that we have a sufficient number of churches to achieve the best result possible. A number of churches have already begun to do this through the 2buy2 service following our earlier promotion of the basket approach.

To get the basket up and running we will need to have churches aligned to the same contract end date. Creating a single Methodist contract end date may mean that many churches over the coming months will have to take contracts that are shorter than 1 year. This shouldn't mean higher costs for your gas or electricity in the short term though and will result in much bigger savings in the long term. To register your interest or to sign up to join the basket, please see the details below, under 'OK - how do I do it?' Or you can contact 2buy2 on the details at the bottom of the page.

We've just signed a new contract!

No problem. You can still register your interest for energy options with 2buy2. When you've registered, you can let them know when your contract ends and they'll be in touch closer to the time to discuss your options. We're hoping to run the Initiative every year and maybe even let churches join 6 months in, so it's worth registering to make sure you don't miss out.

How much will I save?

It depends on how many churches sign up for the Initiative - the more the better! Pricing will be made availablebeforeyou sign a contract, so you'll know exactly how much you'll be paying - and how much you'll be saving.

How much carbon will I cut?

It depends! If you sign up for the Green Electricity option, you'll already be cutting the carbon footprint of the Connexion. If you take the money saved and put that to further energy reduction measures, then you'll be saving even more and cutting the footprint of your own church.

OK - how do I do it?

The first step is to go to the 2buy2 energy page. Click on the 'Register Now' button, and then complete all the details. If you'd like more information on either of the Good Energy options, please tick 'Green Energy' in the 'Interested In' section of the registration. If you'd like more information on My Utility Genius and the energy basket, please tick 'Gas/Electricity'. For GB Oils, tick 'Oil'. You can tick multiple boxes.

Who should make the decision to sign up?

The decision may lie with the minister, the property steward or the treasurer, or any combination of these. It doesn't matter who signs up, as long as someone who has knowledge of the buildings energy bills does.

What happens next?

You will receive confirmation of your registration within one working day. 2buy2 will verify that your church is part of the Connexion and eligible for the service. You will then be able to login to the website, where you can complete a form to register specifically for the Renewable Energy Group Buying Initiative. If you have expressed interest in the other schemes, someone will contact you within three days of registering to discuss your energy requirements.
