Support for Candidates

Yorkshire Plus - Candidates Support Group

Are you considering candidating for presbyteral or diaconal ministry in the Methodist Church?

Would you like to work through this process with others sharing the same journey?

Would you appreciate information, practical help, mutual support and theological reflection along the way?

If so, the Candidates' Support Group is for you and you would be most welcome.

Prior to that, a Candidates' Information Evening will offer a detailed overview of the candidating process for those seriously considering candidating, for their spouses or closest supporters, along with their minister or superintendent. All would be welcome.

"I couldn't have done this without the support group. Thank you."

North West & Mann - 2017 - 18 Candidates Support Group

The aim of the group is to provide information relating to the process of candidating and also to provide support through what can be a challenging year.

In each session we review where candidates are up to in terms of the process, especially as this changes during the course of the year. We also briefly share what we have been reading, specifically the recommended books or other things which we think others may find helpful. We refer frequently to the Candidating material and resources and, certainly in the earlier sessions to the requirements of CPD. In each session there is time for questions and discussion which means that sometimes those questions take priority over the set programme.

Staffing:
The Candidates Support Group is led by a team of five.

Rev. Dr. Jasmine Devadason: a member of the NW Regional Training Team
Rev Christine Dutton: a Circuit Methodist Minister and Postgraduate Tutor at the Urban Theology Unit in Sheffield. Christine as served on the Connexional Candidates Committee
Rev Dr. Christine Jones: a retired Methodist minister with experience in Circuit, on the Connexional Candidates Committee and as a Methodist tutor.
Revd Jackie Bellfield: Minister at Wirral Circuit.
Rev Dr Andrew Pratt: with a passion for hymn writing, a retired Methodist minister with experience in Circuit and as a Methodist tutor.

Session 01:  17th June 2017

We invite to our initial meeting the candidates partner or friend, and their superintendents and look at the process, the committees that will be attended and the requirements, including looking at placements and the Portfolio.
We also start to think about what it means to be called to a specific Order of Ministry.

Session 02: 23rd September 2017

Candidates are asked to share their call and reflect on why they feel called to a specific order of Ministry. In preparation for the portfolio we look at how to do a book review and provide some guidelines as to how to reflect on the Placement. We also spend time thinking about our relationships, to God, ourselves and others.

Session 03:28th October 2017: This session with the 'Endeavor' Group'

This session is led by Rev Dr Andrew Pratt who spends the day looking at Methodist history, ethos and theology.

Session 04: 2nd December 2017

This session is very close to the submission date for the portfolio and so some time will be spent thinking about responses to this.  We look at vocation and what this means including using the Ministries Report presented to the 2016 Conference. We also explore what is meant by the means of grace and their significance for contemporary ministry.  Finally we start to look at what will happen at the District Candidates Committee

Session 05: 6th January 2018

There are three main areas covered in this session: leadership, spirituality and reflecting theologically on local issues.

Session 06: 10th February 2018

A large part of this session is dedicated to thinking about what practically happens at the Connexional Committee, and responding to questions from Candidates. Finally we spend more time thinking about and practicing theological reflection.
