Living Fire

Living Fire101 prayers to help find the new you.

Fans of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia Chronicles will remember when, in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the nasty little boy, Eustace Clarence Scrubb finds himself in a dragon’s lair and, being an acquisitive little blighter, with ‘greedy, dragonish thoughts’, steals a gold bracelet not realizing that, by taking the gold, he will himself be transformed into a dragon.

His attempts to alert his companions to his predicament fail miserably and in his solitary wanderings begins to realize what a rotter he has been. Eventually Aslan appears, and commands Eustace to peel off his dragon’s skin.

In scratching off a superficial layer, Eustace merely reveals a shinier dragon skin beneath.
It is only when Aslan plunges his rapier claws deep into the dragon’s hide, flaying him of his whole skin, that the boy Eustace, now a reformed character, is returned to his human form.

And so it is if we believe the Christian message: we have to change our very person if we are truly to live out God’s plan for us.

The Holy Spirit’s refining fire sears us to the very core of our existence. So, abandon your asbestos boots, your fireproof suit, your goggles and let the incandescent heat of the Holy Spirit truly transform you.
