Training
Encircled in care
Produced in partnership between MHA and the Methodist Church, this resource is for those who care. It offers practical, up-to-date ideas and resources that can help pastoral carers to seek 'life in all its fullness' for the Body of Christ. All in the Church are involved in the health of that body. The quality of our caring is a sign of God's love and a witness to others that Christians have something special to offer a broken world that needs healing and reconciliation.
If you are looking for a resource to train, empower and enable pastoral visitors and others to share in Christ's caring ministry, 'Encircled in care' is for you.
The pack contains three foundation sessions, focussing on why we care, skills needed in our caring and the development of good practice. There are nine issue-based sessions, covering some of the situations that pastoral visitors might need to respond to or be involved with.
Issues-based sessions:
- Prayer in Pastoral Visiting
- Connecting Care and Discipleship
- Children, Young People and Pastoral Care
- Across the Generations
- Extended Communion
- Health, Healing and Wellbeing
- Mental Health Issues
- Loss and Bereavement
- Domestic Abuse
Additional issue-based sessions and resources will be made available on this website from time to time.
The pack contains a CD-ROM with PowerPoint presentations of each session, as well as the text of handouts and prayers.

Training in Pastoral Care
There are various ways training can be provided for people involved with pastoral care. It may be done locally, with the help of a trainer who will come and lead a course for a church or house group. District Training and Development Officers can help arrange this. Alternatively, there are several residential training courses that lead towards a pastoral care qualification and involve training weekends and written assignments. Contact the following links for more information.
