The Methodist Church of Great Britain | Advent wreaths unite local community

WreathSuch was the success of its 2007 festival of Advent wreaths, that the Methodist-Anglican Church of The Nativity in Leicester is repeating the event this November.

The festival was the main focus of an outreach weekend that captured the imagination of Leicester’s Aylestone Park community.

Local businesses, a school, voluntary groups, and church organisations each made an Advent wreath that reflected their work. A local fishmonger used a model fish in the centre of his wreath and a local engineering company chose to have a variety of relays and bolts hanging from theirs!

Knighton Fields Primary School was also most inventive in constructing a wreath made from palm prints of their pupils.

The Revd Alistair Helm says: "The amazing thing was that many of the people who made and brought along wreaths had previously no contact with the church. The whole community were interested and created inspiring decorations."

The church was open for visitors during the day and the church rooms had a variety of stalls and refreshments.

As soon as the event was over last year the organisers knew that they would be repeating it in 2008. And so, on November 29 and 30, the Church of The Nativity will be wreathed once more and the congregation will again welcome school pupils, businesses and other members of the community through its doors as they all unite in preparing Aylestone Park for Christmas.
