Since becoming a subsidiary of MHA (Methodist housing and care charity) at the beginning of 2009, the Auchlochan retirement community in South Lanarkshire has been attracting wide interest. Even families are thinking of moving in!

An open day at Auchlochan in January received a good deal of interest and the sale of a number of flats and apartments are already under negotiation. For one couple in particular Auchlochan’s facilities could not be more ideal.

Jim and Evelyn* moved from their home in England, where Evelyn’s increasing care needs meant that they were facing the prospect of having to live apart after 55 years of marriage.

At Auchlochan, however, they have discovered a place where they can remain close and receive the support they both require. Jim is renting a flat while Evelyn is being cared for at Nethanvale nursing and dementia care home on the estate, just a stone’s throw from Jim’s front door.

The move, which has meant that the couple can be nearer their son, has been a difficult one but they are delighted with the facilities and care that MHA is able to offer.

Cathy Johnston, Auchlochan’s Sales Co-ordinator, says there was a huge smile on Jim’s face when she told him that Auchlochan had its own pastoral team who would be able to welcome both he and Evelyn to their new home and offer them continuing support.

Indeed, the arrangement is proving such a success, and the Auchlochan estate is such an attractive place to live, that Jim and Evelyn’s son and daughter-in-law are now considering buying a property there for their own retirement.

Able to serve 400 older people, the community’s mix of apartments, suites, bungalows and Care Homes means that MHA can offer a remarkable range of independent and supported living that is attracting more than one generation at a time.
