The Methodist Church/United Reformed Church Inter Faith Relations Group

The Connexional year 2008/9 had been a year of development with the implementation of the Team Focus proposals.

As part of the initiative to work ecumenically, in 2009 the Methodist Inter Faith Reference Group and the United Reformed Church Inter Faith Group were succeeded by a joint Methodist/URC Inter Faith Group.

The Revd Dr Christina Le Moignan

The Revd Dr Christina Le Moignan: Methodist Joint Convenor of the Methodist/United Reformed Church Inter Faith Relations Group

Christina Le Moignan is the Methodist Chair of the Joint Methodist/URC Inter-faith Relations Reference Group. Christina was one of the first women to be accepted into the Methodist presbyteral ministry in Britain, and was ordained in 1976.

She served in three circuits, in Huntingdon, Southampton, and Gosport and Fareham, and then moved to Birmingham. From 1989 to 1996 she taught Ethics at the Queen’s Theological Foundation, training men and women for ministry in the Church of England, the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church, and then served for eight years as Chair of the Birmingham Methodist District.

She was President of the Conference in 2001-02, and has written ‘Following the Lamb’, a book about Revelation. She retired to Sherborne in 2004.

Dr Joy Barrow

Dr Joy Barrow: Inter Faith Relations Officer, Methodist Church in Britain

Joy Barrow is the Inter Faith Relations Officer for the Methodist Church in Britain. Prior to that she taught Religious Studies in London Secondary Schools for twenty-five years, after which she was Director of the International Interfaith Centre in Oxford.

Joy has been studying Sikhism, and has been actively involved in inter faith dialogue, for over thirty years. She has a PhD in Sikh spirituality from Leeds University and, in 2003, was Visiting Fellow at Punjabi University, India.

Joy is particularly interested in Christian-Sikh dialogue. She edited ‘Meeting Sikhs’ for Christians Aware and has contributed to a variety of publications on Sikhism and Inter Faith Relations.

The Revd Gareth Jones

The Revd Gareth Jones

Gareth is a Methodist minister with 16 years’ experience of university chaplaincy before moving into full-time inter-faith work in 2007.

He now works as Inter-Faith Development Officer for West Midlands Faiths Forum. He is also the Methodist Trustee of the St Philip’s Centre in Leicester.

Awais Dominic Mughal

Awais Dominic Mughal

Awais has been a Faith to Faith Worker since 2001 at Touchstone Centre Bradford (Methodist Church) and Interfaith Adviser West Yorkshire Methodist District.

Prior to that, from 1981-97 Awais taught in Missionary schools where Muslim students were in the majority, and from 1997-99 in Beaconhouse School System, a private school run by a Muslim management.

Her role at the Touchstone Centre in Bradford is to nurture good relations between various communities by understanding and respecting the differences of cultural & religious traditions. It is carried out by organising various interfaith activities such as Interfaith Prayers for Peace, and the Interfaith Writers Group which reflects on social, religious and political issues regarding social cohesion and shares poetry in different languages.

Awais also speaks at women’s groups in different churches and writes for the ‘Faith Matters’ column in local Urdu and English newspapers. She has enjoyed the great experience of living with Muslim neighbours both in Pakistan and in Bradford

The Revd Dr Stephen Skuce

The Revd Dr Stephen Skuce

An Irish Methodist minister, Stephen currently teaches mission at Cliff College. His previous experience includes pastoral ministry in Ireland, missionary service in Sri Lanka and university chaplaincy in Dublin.

His research and publishing interests are primarily in the area of mission and inter-faith understanding. Stephen is married to Marlene and they have two daughters.

I have been a minister since 1990, serving in turn in all the former North, Cymru, and South Wales Districts, and now in Wales Synod. In addition to circuit work I was ecumenical officer for Methodism in Wales from 1997 to 2002. From 2004 to 2007 I was moderator of the Free Church Council of Wales, in which role I was on the Interfaith Forum at the National Assembly of Wales, and the Faith Communities Council where faith leaders in Wales met apart from the politicians. During the same period I was involved in the then 'Interfaith Swansea'.

Revd Peter Brain

Peter is the United Reformed Church joint convenor of the Methodist Church/United Reformed Church Inter Faith Relations Group. Peter is retired as a URC minister who has been involved in public policy for United Reformed Church and is a former chair of the West of England Faith Forum.  

Revd Dr Michael Jagessar

Michael is presently Secretary for Racial Justice in the United Reformed Church, prior to which he taught Inter Faith studies at Queens Foundation, Birmingham.  

Revd Bill Burgess

Bill is a United Reformed Church minister and Inter Faith Advocate in the United Reformed Church Merseyside Synod.

Revd Tim Clarke

Tim is the United Reformed Minister of two churches in Hackney and Islington. The Finsbury Park mosque is located in Islington.

Revd Clare Downing

Clare is a United Reformed Church minister who has been working at the St Philips Centre in Leicester for the last two years.

David Jonathan

Johny, as David is more familiarly known, works in Luton with Grassroots. Grassroots has three themes: Christianity and justice, women and faith, and Inter Faith Relations. Johny’s main emphasis is on community dialogue.

Peter is a United Reformed Church minister. He is presently the Secretary for Church Life and Inter Faith Relations at Churches Together in Britain and Ireland before which he was Deputy Director of the London Inter Faith Centre.
