For the attention of the Bishop of Rome and the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, Francis I

May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you during this time of Lent.

We received news of your election as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday 13 March with surprise and anticipation.  The Argentine Evangelical Methodist Church believes that this appointment is the culmination of a pastoral ministry that you have been developing in your church over a long period of time, where dialogue with other Christian traditions, of which we are a part of, has always been a part.

You have asked people to pray for you and your responsibilities, which is why we we wish to commit our Church to praying for you, as we ask the Holy Spirit to inspire you in the calling you have received to shepherd the Catholic flock.  We hope that you will have a ministry that fruitfully seeks peace, justice and mutual respect between people, values that the world we currently live in desperately needs.

Today's world is divided and violent. For this reason we ask the Holy Spirit to continue encouraging dialogue between Christians through your ministry, in order that we might bear witness to unity and to our mutual commitment to peace. We urgently need to bear witness to these so that in doing so we may help heal the wounds of the nations and give them hope.

I close with the words of the Apostle Paul:

"He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.   For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household..."Ephesians 2: 17-19 (NIV).
