Denying generations of Haitians the right to Dominican nationality

The Consejo Latinoamericano de Iglesias [The Latin American Council of Churches or CLAI] is a long-standing Latin American ecumenical partner organisation. Some of the most recent partnership work we have been doing together is on the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Colombia or PEACas it is known (click here for more info in Spanish, but you can use an online translation tool to translate the website), helping to accompany the many communities ofdesplazados[internally displaced peoples] in Colombia.

CLAIrecently wrote a letter to the President of the Dominican Republic on behalf of its 167 member churches (who comprise 5 million believers throughout Latin America) concerning a decision that effectively denies the descendants of up to four generations of Haitians, who arrived illegally or in transit to the country, the right to claim Dominican nationality. This effectively leaves them stateless. You can read a translation of the CLAI letter sent in reaction to this verdict here.
