May 2014 World Church Bulletin

Dear friends in mission:

"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

This month saw 200 school girls kidnapped in Nigeria. In such circumstances, It's easy to shake our heads, tut sympathetically, and then to carry on with our lives. After all, it isn't directly affecting those of us who are not in Nigeria. This however, is not a geographical issue. This is a violation of rights- It is injustice, and as Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere".

As Christians, this is an issue we should all be worried about. Yet, in Philippians 4:6-7 we can read the words "Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." This is not to say that we should disregard such issues, but rather that in the face of them we should not forget the power of prayer.

When visiting Malta earlier this month, the Archbishop of the Methodist Church of Nigeria stated that "Overcoming injustice requires ignition of that spark for justice that lies within each of us". Therefore let us pray for justice. Let us pray for the ignition of that spark in the hearts of those who perpetrate injustice, let us do what we can, and leave the rest to God. "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Praying for peace and justice,
