October 2014 World Church Bulletin

"In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover." Exodus 12:11 ESV

Most people do not tend to eat dinner with their shoes and coat on, staff in hand, ready to go. But in this chapter of Exodus, which describes the institution of the first Passover, this is exactly what the Israelites are commanded to do. How odd it must have been for them when they received those first instructions! But these are not instructions which were only relevant to the Israelites at that moment in time. They are also relevant to us, today. The Israelites were about to move into a new phase of their lives- into a new land, with a God they were newly rediscovering- and they were to look the part! Instead of sitting around leisurely in the run-up to their departure from Egypt, they were to be proactive, and to be ready.

Just like the Israelites in this passage we too have recently entered a new month and a new phase of Church life. And as we finally settle into the routine of a new connexional year  we have time to think back over these past few months, which have seen members of the World Church Relationships team with their sandals on their feet, and their metaphorical staff in their hands, visiting partner churches and organisations all over the world. In the past few months alone there have been visits to Zambia, Russia, Papua New Guinea, Myanmar, Haiti, and New York. The number of stories that have come back regarding the resilience of the Methodist Church overseas, the determination of partner churches and organisations to stand up and act in the face of trouble and the joy and love of those with whom they have come into contact is truly encouraging.

This issue of the World Church Bulletin shares just a few of those stories, focusing on "movement" and progress. What do you or your church need to act on with more haste and faith? In what area do you need to fasten your belt, put on your shoes and be prepared to move forward?

Wishing you faith and progress,

The World Church Relationships Team
