Please Pray For Asia Bibi

Two years after the post below we ask you to please continue to pray for Asia Bibi who was accused of blasphemy in 2010 and subsequently sentenced to death. Her appeal is due to take place on the 13 October 2016 for finial decision before the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Given the sensitive nature of this case, we ask you to please support her in prayer.

16 October 2014

In 2010 Asia Bibi was convicted of blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad, and sentenced to death. Today, on 16 October 2014, her appeal was rejected by the High Court Lahore.

The Christian Pakistani woman, who has consistently denied the claims against her, is the latest victim of the Blasphemy Laws. The defence counsel argued her innocence, stating that Asia Bibi had uttered nothing against the Prophet Mohammad. The defence counsel also challenged the credibility of prosecution witnesses as there were so many material contradictions in the statement of witnesses, claiming the accusation stemmed from jealousy or grudges.

After four hours discussion and hearing, the judge, Mr. Justice Anwar-ul-Haq passed a short order and confirmed the death sentence previously passed.

Asia Bibi now has the right to file an appeal in the Supreme Court of Pakistan within 30 days.

A statement from one of our partner organisations reads: "We are deeply saddened by the court decision today which was not passed on merit and it would not be wrong if we say that it was a biased decision. …We are [now] worried about the other cases of blasphemy which are under proceeding in the different courts of Punjab."

Please remember Asia Bibi in your prayers, as well as others being wrongfully convicted under the Blasphemy laws.
