The Death of Bishop Ting in China

The Death has been announced of Bishop Ting in China. Below is the text of a letter of condolence sent to Revd Gao Feng of the China Christian Council and to Mr Qiu Zhonghui, General Secretary of The Amity Foundation, from The General Secretary of the Methodist Church in Britain,

The Methodist Church in Britain is deeply saddened to hear that Bishop Ting passed away yesterday and sends its heartfelt condolences to his family and to all the Christians in China who will mourn his passing.

Bishop Ting was a highly respected leader in many parts of the world, not least in Britain. He was a visionary leader of Chinese Christians and the Methodist Church takes this opportunity, to express its deep gratitude for the contribution Bishop Ting made both to building ecumenical partnerships between the Chinese Church and other Churches and also to enabling the Chinese Church to play its part in the worldwide Church of Jesus Christ.

In 1985, together with other Christian leaders, Bishop Ting set up the Amity Foundation, out of a deep concern for the needs of Chinese people, and the Methodist Church in Britain is privileged and proud to have been able to express God's love through its partnership with that organization over the 27 years of its life.

Bishop Ting was a faithful disciple of his Lord. His vision, leadership and love will continue to be an inspiration to Christians in China and through his legacy we will all continue to be challenged to faithful discipleship and to cooperative, ecumenical working wherever possible to the glory of God and for the benefit of all God's people.

Love never dies.

Martyn Atkins
General Secretary of the Methodist Church in Britain and Secretary of Conference
