Offering responsible pilgrimage
The Methodist Liaison Office can help arrange study tours for seminaries/clergy and include the usual holy sites visits with visits to partner organizations, both Palestinian and Israeli, working in conjunction with a local Christian travel agency. It also places Individual Volunteers in Mission who come for two weeks to one year based on their skills and the local needs. They also coordinate with their partners on tourism packages. All the pilgrimage tours suggested have an advocacy component with suggestions on how to stay involved upon return.
As part of the responsible pilgrimage focus, for the past three years staff have been working closely with the Methodist Church Nigeria to enable the 75,000 Nigerians that do pilgrimage there every year make contact with the indigenous Christian community. Partnering with local organizations, including several Christian, Muslim and Jewish organizations ones. For example, partnering with a Community Development Project which involves supporting income generating projects locally (such as basket weaving in this photo) while working on education and advocacy internationally.
