British two-handed sign alphabet

 

This is the Two Handed Manual Alphabet for sighted deaf people.
 

Text description

•  A The fingers of left hand are straight. The thumb is straight and spread away from fingers. The tip of the index finger of right hand is touching tip of thumb of left hand. The other fingers and thumb of right hand are folded out of the way. (same as deafblind manual).

•  B. Both hands have fingers and thumb curved with the tip of the thumb touching the tip of the index finger. The hands are placed together such that the tip of each finger and thumb touch the tip of the corresponding digit on the other hand.

  C. Is signed using only the right hand. The fingers and thumb are curved so that the index finger and thumb form a backward "C" shape.

•  D. The fingers of the left hand are straight. The thumb is spread out of the way. The fingers and thumb of the right hand are curved with the tip of the index finger touching the tip of the index finger on the left hand and the tip of the thumb touching the base of the index finger on the left hand. This forms a "D" shape. (same as deafblind manual).

•  E. The fingers of left hand are straight. The tip of the index finger of right hand touches tip of index finger of left hand. The other fingers and the thumb on right hand are folded out of the way. (same as deafblind manual).

•  F. Both hands are palm down with index and middle finger straight. The others fingers and thumb are folded out of the way. The index and middle finger of the right hand are laid across the back of the index and middle finger of the left hand.

•  G. Both hands are in the form of a clenched fist with the thumb at the top of the fist. The Right hand is placed on top of the left hand such that the little finger of the right hand is against the thumb and index finger of the left hand.

•  H. Both hands are flat. The left hand is palm up. The right hand is palm down. The fingers of the right hand are moved across the left hand from the palm to the tips of the fingers. (same as deafblind manual).

•  I. The fingers of left hand are straight. The tip of the index finger of right hand is touching tip of middle finger of left hand. The other fingers and thumb of right hand are folded out of the way. (same as deafblind manual).

•  J. The left hand is flat, palm up. The tip of index finger of right hand touches tip of middle finger of left hand and then moves down the finger, down the palm and around the base of the thumb (same as deafblind manual).

•  K. The fingers of the left hand are straight. The thumb is straight and spread out of the way. The index finger of right hand is bent with the first joint (from the hand) touching the centre of the index finger of the left hand. This forms a "K" shape. The other fingers and thumb of the right hand are folded out of the way. (similar to the deafblind manual).

•  L. The left hand is flat, palm up. The right hand is palm down. The index finger of the right hand is straight and laid across palm of left hand. The other fingers and thumb of right hand are folded out of the way. (same deafblind manual).

•  M. The left hand is flat, palm up. The right hand is palm down. The index, middle and ring finger of right are straight and laid across palm of left hand. The little finger and thumb of right hand are folded out of the way. (same deafblind manual).

•  N. The left hand is flat, palm up. The right hand is palm down. The index and middle finger of right hand are laid across palm of left hand. The other fingers and thumb of right hand are folded out of the way. (same deafblind manual).

•  O. The fingers of left hand are straight. The tip of the index finger of right hand is touching tip of ring finger of left hand. The other fingers and thumb of right hand are folded out of the way. (same as deafblind manual).

•  P. The fingers of the left hand are straight. The thumb is straight and spread out of the way. The fingers and thumb of the right hand are curved with the tip of the index finger touching the tip of the thumb. The tips of the thumb and index finger are also touching the tip of the index finger of the left hand to form a "P" shape. (same as deafblind manual).

•  Q. The fingers and thumb of the left hand are curved with the tip of the index finger touching the tip of the thumb. The index finger of the right hand is laid across the base of the thumb on the back of the left hand. This forms a "Q" shape.

•  R. The left hand is flat, palm up. The middle, ring and little fingers of the right hand are folded down, held in place by the thumb. The index finger is slightly bent. The index finger is laid across the palm of the left hand. The section of the middle finger between the hand and the first joint is touching the edge of the left hand.

•  S. The left hand is palm up with the little finger straight. The other fingers are folded. The right hand is palm down with the little finger straight and laid across the little finger of the right hand. The other fingers of the right hand are folded.

•  T. The left hand is flat, palm up. The index finger of the right hand is straight with the tip touching the edge of the left hand half way between the base of the little finger and the wrist. The other fingers of the right hand are folded out of the way.

•  U. Fingers of left hand are straight. Tip of the index finger of right hand is touching tip of little finger of left hand. Other fingers and thumb of right hand are folded out of the way. (same as deafblind manual).

•  V. The left hand is flat, palm up. The right hand is palm down with the index finger and middle finger straight, spread to form a "V" shape and laid across the palm of the right hand. The other fingers and thumb of the right hand are folded out of the way. (same as deafblind manual).

•  W. Both hands are palm down and have all fingers straight. The thumbs are straight and spread apart from the fingers. The hands are together so that the fingers are interlocking. The fingers cross at about the second joint from the hand.

•  X. Both hand have the index finger straight. The other fingers and thumb are folded out of the way. The index fingers are cross to form an "X" shape.

•  Y. The left hand is palm down and has all finger straight. The thumb is straight and spread slightly from the index finger. The index finger of the right hand is straight and laid across the base of the thumb of the right hand such that the thumb and index finger of the left hand and the index finger of the right hand form a "Y" shape. The other fingers and thumb of the right hand are folded out of the way.

•  Z. The left hand is flat, palm up. The fingers of the right hand are straight and their tips are touching the palm of the left hand.
