For Tomorrow Too
A New Resource from Tearfund

Churches' Criminal Justice ForumFor those individuals and churches wanting to live more responsibly in a world of climate change, Tearfund has produced a useful booklet ' For tomorrow too'. It suggests practical things to do, to ensure that the way we live, reflects our concern for God's people and planet - and especially people living in poverty, who are most threatened by the effects of climate change. These are a few of the ideas from the booklet that you might not have thought about - or, perhaps, have tried to avoid thinking about:

•  Wash up by hand rather than using energy to power the dishwasher

•  Unplug the mobile phone charger when not in use - 95 per cent of the energy used is when the phone is not plugged in

•  Turn off electrical appliances at the mains rather than leaving them on standby; eight per cent of energy consumed at home is by appliances not being used

•  Wash clothes at lower temperatures

•  Downsize; smaller cars consume less fuel, cause less pollution and cut costs

•  Choose coach or train rather than car or plane where possible

•  If you must fly, cut environmental costs by offsetting emissions; organisations like Future Forests and Climate Care offer a range of options - from planting trees, which absorb carbon dioxide, to researching energy efficiency

•  Reduce the number of plastic bags you use; every week in the UK we use around 150 million plastic bags, most of which end up in landfill sites and take 500 years to de-compose

•  Take unwanted clothes to charity shops for re-use.

'For tomorrow too' recognises that individual action isn't the only answer to a global problem, but says that if we are asking governments to act, we need to ensure that our everyday life gives a message about what we believe. The booklet is available free (but donations for multiple copies would be appreciated) from Tearfund enquiry@tearfund.org or 0845 355 8355 or www.tearfund.org
