PUBLIC MEETING AT UPTON BY CHESTER URC

“GLOBAL WARMING – WHAT UPTON CAN DO”

45 people attended the Public Meeting arranged by Upton URC on 3 October; around half of those present were not linked to the church.

Becky Hurst, from Christian Aid, spoke about the effects of climate change today, particularly in developing countries. In the Philippines, for example, people are already suffering from unpredictable weather patterns, making life in rural communities particularly difficult.

We were challenged by Professor Roy Alexander of Chester University to consider what we might do to enable Upton to become “Carbon Neutral”. He described what has been done in Ashton Hayes, a village close to Chester, and suggested how we might start a similar project in our community.

Many people took away Carbon Neutral pledge cards, which enable them to sign up to energy saving measures in their homes and in their means of transport, thus reducing their carbon footprint.

Advice on energy saving was available from the Cheshire Energy Efficiency Advice Service and Total Home Efficiency who sent along representatives to the meeting.

At the end of the meeting 8 people expressed an interest in joining a group to see whether we could launch a project to make Upton a more energy efficient community.  John Hainsworth
