Methodist Church to launch Lent 'credit card'

Buy Less Live MoreDuring Lent 2008 the Methodist Church is to provide a web based resource www.buylesslivemore.org.uk to encourage people to change their patterns of behaviour during Lent - becoming less 'consumerist' and more generous and fulfilled.

There will be two different challenges on each day of Lent, around the two themes of 'Buy Less' and 'Live More'.

The challenges will be available on the website, by email subscription, and also through a Facebook group. People will be able to share their experiences online.

To tie in with and promote 'Buy Less Live More' a special Lent 'credit card' will be produced. The idea is that people can put the cards in their wallets, perhaps covering up their real credit cards, as a reminder to 'think before you spend'.

The cards will be available in packs of ten from mph in the New Year. They will be free, with a small charge for postage.

A word in your ear - "Listen to Bible studies any time, any place"

Word in your earA Word in Time, the online Bible study launched on the Methodist Church website in September, has been hugely successful and now the service has been developed for audio, making access to a daily Bible study easier than ever.

An audio file of each day's Bible study, and a larger file with a week of studies can easily be downloaded onto a computer or mph3 player, so that users can listen at a time convenient to them. Whether you're at the gym, relaxing in the bath, doing your weekly shop or on a daily commute to work, you can listen in.

A Word in Time features a daily Bible reading, background to the text, reflections with questions to ponder, and can be found at:

Generating gifts of kindness this Christmas

Christmas KindnessThe rejesus.co.uk website is encouraging people to think beyond present buying this Christmas. The challenge from rejesus is to think about offering gifts of acts of kindness and generous actions.

If you're stuck for ideas on how you can generate and spread some kindness, then the rejesus website offers some great suggestions.  They advise setting yourself a limit of £10 but you may spend nothing, of course.  After all, what do kindness and generous actions cost? But how far will kindness radiate and what effects will your actions have?

As well as spreading some kindness this Christmas, leave a comment on the rejesus.co.uk website to encourage others. Jesus showed his love for people through words and actions.  Let's follow his example this Christmas.

Quiet Spaces - Sacred Places

  • Quiet Spaces Sacred PlacesWhen and how do we find our quiet space or sacred place?
  • How do we make a place sacred?
  • What do we consider to be sacred space in our world?

These questions and more will be explored at a weekend residential event, organised by the Women's Network in the Methodist Church from 18-20 April 2008. Other highlights of the weekend include sessions on creative writing, art appreciation, retreats and leading retreats. Children will be specially catered for too.

The venue is the Hayes Conference Centre, which is set in the beautiful Peak District at Swanwick, Derbyshire.

The full programme and a downloadable booking form can be found at:

Climate change

The climate is changing and droughts, floods and extreme weather are having a big impact on the world's poorest people. To stop climate chaos we need to act together and act now, says Sarah Hagger of the Methodist Relief and Development Fund.

Reflecting the urgency of the situation, MRDF has published a study pack on climate change which includes discussion questions on Bible passages, stories from MRDF partners and practical ways to respond. The pack is ideal for use in housegroups, youth clubs or Lent groups. Why wait for Lent? Act now.

There is no charge for the pack which can be ordered by calling MRDF on 020 7567 5132 or downloaded from:

Methodist Web Radio

11 Million Takeover Day
The latest podcast is rather different as the content is provided entirely by children from Years 4 and 6 at St Mary's Primary School, Bryanston Square, London. The children came to take over Methodist Church House as part of 11Million Day on November 23. Our thanks go to all our young journalists and their willing interviewees. For more information, visit www.methodist.org.uk/static/takeover/

Listen at:

You can also arrange to have the podcast downloaded automatically each month if you have iTunes or similar 'podcasting' software on your computer.

Interface

www.theinterface.org.uk: where Christianity meets Culture

  • Do the words that Christmas cards offer even begin to express the extent of what God was setting out to do at that first Christmas in Bethlehem? The pet hates of the writer of this article are 'Seasons Greetings' and 'Merry Christmas'.  Are there words or phrases that really 'bug' you and what would you prefer to read in your cards this Christmas?

Add your voice to the debate - the interface site was created with the aim of providing a friendly space for Methodists to discuss hot news topics and their implications for our faith.

May the love, joy and hope found in Jesus, fill our hearts this Christmas and always
