All change for Churches Education Service

A new Education Unit serving the churches currently inmembership of the Free Churches' Council will be in place from 1April 2001, based at Methodist Church House in London. A FreeChurches desk at Churches Together in England (CTE) will serve FreeChurch interests, with separate arrangements for the work in Wales, following a decision by the Free Churches' Council in November tocease operation of the present structure.

The Free Churches' Education Unit will incorporate the work ofGillian Wood (currently Free Churches' Education Secretary), andKathleen Wood (Connexional Education Officer), as well as otherwork in Schools and Colleges, Further Education and HigherEducation Chaplaincy. A new Education Committee will be formed toguide the work, with representation from across the FreeChurches.

There will be no reduction in the support service that Kathleenoffers to the Methodist day schools, and Methodist responsibilitiesas providers of education will be fulfilled. Gillian will continueto support to Free Church reps on SACREs and LEA educationcommittees.

It is hoped that working collaboratively will release resourcesto tackle new work. The Unit will look to finding better ways tosupport the thousands of Free Church members involved in educationas teachers, lecturers, administrators and governors, and offeringtraining for ministers and lay people who work in communityschools, particularly those leading acts of collective worship.
