Football unites nationalities and faiths - Sunderland Methodist Church

Sunderland Methodist Church has started a girls’ soccer team in Kenya. Sunderland Samba Football Club has been promoted into the Kenya Football Federation national league. The scheme provides volunteering, coaching, youth work and international exchange opportunities.

The club brings together people from different nationalities and faiths, helping them to realise that they can achieve more in collaboration, despite ethnic differences. Some of the players are from Kibera, described as one of the biggest slums in East Africa.

Tunde Sobitan, a community and youth worker, believes that the work of Sunderland Samba will last for generations: “It is incredible to see the walls of division that people have built from popular opinions and stereotypes come tumbling down as people start to learn about each other’s lives.”
