We notice God in Scripture, and the world
We are to be alert to the presence of God and the prompting of the Holy Spirit everywhere – in nature, in family, in work, in books, in films, in leisure, in our local community and in world events.
God is present and at work everywhere. We are learning to recognise and respond to the Divine.
A woman and her friend were in downtown New York. It was during the rush hour and the streets were filled with people. Cars were honking their horns, taxicabs were squealing around the corners, sirens were wailing and the sounds of the city were almost deafening.
Suddenly, the woman said, “I hear a cricket”.
Her friend said, “What, you must be crazy. You couldn’t possibly hear a cricket in all this noise!”
“No, I’m sure of it,” the woman said. “I heard a cricket.” She listened carefully for a moment, and then walked across the street to where some shrubs were growing on a piece of waste land. She looked into the bushes, beneath the branches, and sure enough, he located a small cricket.
Her friend was amazed. “That’s incredible,” he said. “You must have superhuman ears!”
“No,” said the woman. “My ears are no different from yours. It all depends on what you’re listening for.”
“Yes, that’s true,” her friend replied. “It depends on what is really important to you. Here, let me show you.”
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a few coins and dropped them on the sidewalk. Then, with the noise of the crowd still blaring in their ears, they noticed every head within twenty feet turn and look to see if the money that tinkled on the pavement was theirs.
“See what I mean?” asked the woman. “It all depends on what’s important to you.”
