Year of Prayer
Why a Year of Prayer?
The Conference has declared 2020/2021 a year of prayer so that our Church-wide commitments to evangelism, church growth, church at the margins, and pioneering and church planting will flow from a deep, contemplative [or ‘prayerful’?] orientation to God’s grace as we listen for God’s voice and will for us and the world.
Be part of a movement of prayer and the Holy Spirit and prayer. Pray with the whole Church for us to deepen our commitment to being a growing, evangelistic, inclusive, justice-seeking Church of gospel people.
[Put this section in a box - ask Oli how to do that!]
Praying with the whole Church
For a taste of what it is to have the whole Church praying, join the online prayer meeting every Tuesday, starting from September 1st. Feel the joy of praying together with others across the whole of the Methodist Church as we pray for the Church and its life and work on Tuesdays from 12.45 to 1.00 at https://xxxxxxxxx.
(If you are unable to access the internet or can’t make the time slot there are alternative options for you still be part of the Church’s praying.)
This online experience of shared prayer will draw on the rich diversity of Methodist traditions and leadership to help the whole Church journey deeper into prayer together. In each 15 minute session, a different leader will help to draw participants into a creative experience of online community centred on praying together. To inspire and energise prayer, session leaders will each bring a brief story of Methodism at work in their contexts as they live out the Church’s commitment to evangelism and growth. In the main part of each session participants will be led in creative ways into prayer whether praying with images, with music, in silence, with poetry, liturgically or in free prayer.
Other options if you are not able to join the Tuesday lunchtime meeting:
- If you have online access, a recording of the session will be available here by the end of the next day?/end of the week?
- If you aren’t able to make the online meeting you may wish to stop each Tuesday, either at 12.45 or at another convenient time to hold the Methodist Church in prayer before God. You are invited to pray the ‘breakthrough prayer’ below. If you have regular access to the internet, the scripture passage for each Tuesday can be accessed here [set up a system to make this happen] the day before the prayer session so you can read it before praying.
[To be provided by E&G team – placeholder: ‘Leading your Church into Growth’ prayer]
God of Mission, who alone brings growth to your Church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to our actions and power to our witness. Help our church to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you and in service to our local community, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
