I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. (v. 23)

1 Corinthians 9:19-27 Friday 16 May 2025

Psalm 2

Background
Paul's sense is that believing in Christ sets you free and it brings an opportunity for him to control his body to be a better witness/disciple. Here he is talking about both his practice and the purpose behind what he is doing and we hear him talking about what we might term his 'evangelism strategy'. It is adaptable, sensitive and open – he aims to become all things to all people (v. 22) but without compromise. From a Jewish background himself, he is prepared to take on again the traditions of the elders in order to engage with the Jews, or to set them aside in order to connect with those for whom this is not their practice.

Paul wants to be able to relate to everyone. We hear too of his aim to save some people (v. 22). He is realistic in his endeavours and the change from win (v. 19) to save (v. 22) is a move from quantity to quality in the eternal dimension. He knows that he will not persuade everyone to follow Jesus, but for some of those he encounters this will be a significant moment in their faith journey, and he is content with that.

In this passage we note that for Paul his Jewish background is not the most important factor. It was more important to empathise with and acknowledge other people and to see them as his equal. It's a lesson we could take to heart today.

To Ponder:

  • What does freedom in Christ mean for you today?
  • How do you respond to Paul’s notion of enslaving his body so that he is more effective in evangelism and what does this look like for you?
  • What spurs you on to save some for Christ?

Prayer
Loving God, in Paul the great evangelist we find one who is so comfortable in his relationship with you that he is free to be as you need him to be with those who are different from him. Help us to hold that same confidence, that we may share our faith in relevant and engaging ways in our communities. To the glory of your name. Amen.
