- Bible Book:
- Amos
And the Lord said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" (v. 8)
Background
In today's passage, the prophet receives a series of visions that reveal both the seriousness of God’s judgement and the depth of his mercy. Amos sees locusts consuming the crops and fire devouring the land, both images of destruction that would leave the people devastated. In each case, Amos cries out to God on behalf of Israel: “O Lord God, forgive, I beg you! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!” (see v. 2) Remarkably, God listens and relents. These moments show the compassion of God and the power of intercession. Even in judgement, God hears the prayers of those who seek mercy.
The third vision is different. Amos sees the Lord standing beside a wall with a plumb-line, a tool used to test whether a structure is straight and sound. God declares that he is measuring his people against the standard of justice and righteousness. Israel had become crooked through corruption, injustice and false worship. Unlike the earlier visions, there is no relenting this time. The people had repeatedly ignored God’s warnings and opportunities to change.
This passage reminds us that God is both loving and holy. Grace does not mean ignoring sin or injustice. John Wesley taught that God’s grace continually works within us to transform our hearts and lives. The image of the plumb-line invites us to reflect honestly on whether our lives are aligned with God’s will. Are we building our lives on faithfulness, mercy and truth, or have we allowed selfishness and complacency to shape us?
Amos also demonstrates the importance of prayerful compassion. Rather than standing apart in judgement, he pleads for the people. We too are called to pray for our communities and for a world that often wanders from God’s ways.
God’s desire is always restoration. The plumb-line is not simply about condemnation; it is an invitation to return to lives grounded in justice, integrity and faithful discipleship.
To Ponder:
- What might 'God’s plumb-line' reveal about my own priorities and choices?
- How can I pray more faithfully for my community and for those who are struggling?
- In what areas of my life is God calling me towards greater integrity and faithfulness?
Prayer
Holy and merciful God, thank you for your patience and grace towards us. Help us to examine our lives honestly and to seek what is right and true. Teach us to pray with compassion for others and to walk faithfully in your ways. Shape our hearts so that our lives reflect your justice, mercy and love. Amen.
