Jesus replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (vs 48-50)

Matthew 12:46-50 Thursday 9 October 2025

Psalm 73:15-28

Background
Jesus was speaking to the crowds when his mother and brothers came looking for him. Perhaps they were concerned about his safety, as alongside those who were excited and telling everyone about his healing and teaching, there were others who were causing trouble for him. In Mark 3:21, we are told that the crowds followed him, so that he didn't even have time to eat, and his family went looking for him, because people were saying "He has gone out of his mind".

Isn’t it often the case that when things seem to be going well, there is an accompanying challenge? Or, that perhaps those closest to you don’t understand your ideals or calling to a vocation? That can be the same too for Christians, as friends or family may not have the same understanding of their faith. After all, becoming a Christian often means a transformation, that is, changing from old ways to new ways, becoming more ‘Christ-like’ in the way that we think, act and believe.

When people came to Jesus to let him know that his mother and brothers were wanting to speak to him, he turned this around, saying ‘"...whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." As the apostle Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians (5:1-2) “Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

To Ponder:

  • Are you ready for your life to be changed through Jesus? If so, what do you need to leave behind?
  • What challenges are there in this Bible passage for you? What help do you need to look or ask for?

Prayer
Living Lord, you know how difficult it can be when others don’t understand our beliefs, or our chosen way of living. We ask for your help; may you be alongside us in our difficulties. And help us too, to be there for others who are seeking to follow your way of life. May we remember that we are one family in you, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
