"But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also." (v. 39)

Matthew 5:38-39 Tuesday 11 February 2025

Psalm 71:17-24

Background
Today's Bible passage continues Jesus' teaching, known as the Sermon on the Mount. His instruction to turn the other cheek is deeply relevant in a world often marked by conflict and retaliation.

In our personal lives 'turning the other cheek' is relevant to navigating relationships. It helps believers respond to conflicts in marriages, families and friendships with humility and love.

In our public lives this principle applies when engaging in society. Christians are called to stand out by refusing to engage in the culture of revenge and instead promote peace and reconciliation.

In our private lives, turning the other cheek comes into play when dealing with online discussion and arguments. In a digital age where insults and arguments can escalate quickly, turning the other cheek means responding with kindness and self-control.

In general, this principle invites Christians to be peacemakers and ambassadors of Christ’s love in all areas of life.

On 29 July 2024, a mass stabbing took place, targeting young girls at the Hart Space, a dance studio in the Meols Cop area of Southport, Merseyside. In quick response the Methodist Church produced and posted the song ‘See the Love’, including a prayer and reflection by the then Superintendent Minister of the Southport Circuit the Revd Marie-Anne Kent. In reflection and response to today’s reading, I invite you to watch the video See The Love.

To Ponder:

  • When have you been confronted and found it difficult to turn the other cheek?
  • In what ways are you challenged personally by today’s reading?
  • What do you need to do as a response to today’s reflection?

Prayer
Give grace, O Lord, to live lovingly, challenge wrong-doing with integrity and be an authentic disciple of Jesus. Amen.
