Bible Book:
Acts

"Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, 'Look at us'. And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them." (v.4-5)

Acts 3:1-10 Monday 30 June 2008

Background

In the time immediately after Pentecost we see the ApostlesPeter and John going to the Temple to pray, as it appears they didmost days. But today was different. The lame man, who they musthave walked past many times, somehow caught Peter's attention.Peter noticed him, John noticed him, and both "looked intently" athim. A reminder perhaps of how Jesus always looked closely atpeople around him. Then come the words, "Look at us".

This is very important because it is right in line with theactivities of Jesus whenever he wanted to heal anyone. He neverwalked up to someone and merely touched them and healed themwithout first directing their attention to himself. He alwayscaptured the attention of the individuals he wanted to heal anddirected them to focus their gaze upon him.

So the man looked at Peter and John, expecting something, and washealed.

Healing began with Peter and John seeing the man, as if for thefirst time. His presence had been acknowledged by other humanbeings - he mattered. His healing continued when he was encouragedto look at Peter and John. To become aware of their interest inhim. To wonder expectantly at what he might receive. To catch aglimpse of something that might make a difference and mighttransform his life.

To Ponder

How good are you at noticing people around you?The homeless person asleep in a doorway, the Big Issue seller, thelonely person on the bus. How can you be more observant?

When people look at you, what do you think theysee? Do you think there might be the possibility that they see alittle of Christ in you?

How can you bring hope to people around youtoday?
