Bible Book:
Exodus

"Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." (v.6)

Exodus 17:1-7 Saturday 1 March 2008

Background

The people of Israel have been freed from slavery. They haveleft Egypt and are in the desert wilderness, hot and weary withtravel. They are very thirsty and cantankerous. They are sothirsty, in fact, that they look back to Egypt and the relativesecurity of captivity compared to the uncertainties of theirjourney.

God tells Moses to strike a rock with his rod - the same rod whichMoses held up at the start of the journey so that the sea wasparted and the people of Israel escaped from Egypt (Exodus 14:21-23).Water gushes from the rock.

God who freed the people and set them off on their travels hasprovided for them on the journey.

Sometimes we avoid making a decision or setting out on a newjourney in life because we like our security and the prospect seemsrisky. But the new path, with all its risks, may be the one thatwill set us free.

To Ponder

Can you think of a time when you dared to take arisk and it did in fact set you free? What would you have missed ifyou had decided to 'play safe'?

Are there any people who need your support eitherin leaving something behind or in just finding the resources tokeep going? What can you do to help them?
