Bible Book:
Ephesians

I... beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called. (v. 1)

Ephesians 4:1-16 Tuesday 23 August 2022

Psalm 34:11-22

Background

After three chapters reflecting on the nature of the Christian message, the writer (whether Paul himself or, as many scholars believe, someone writing in his name) turns to some practical applications. The major part of today’s passage concerns unity in diversity. So we start with a plea for unity and forbearance.

There are many gifts among the community, some of which would develop over time into official forms of ministry recognised today. The true giver of those gifts must be recognised (v. 7). They are for the benefit of every member (vs 12-13) and the goal is a mature faith and a mature community.

But the challenge is great. Before the New Testament was formed and in circulation much depended on word of mouth and a visitor from outside (or someone within claiming inspiration) could easily introduce new ideas that distorted Jesus' message. And sometimes they had ulterior motives. Love and unity (vs 2-3 and 15) are paramount.

To Ponder:

  • In what ways is this passage relevant for today’s Church?
  • How would you define heresy?
  • Are fellow Christians easier to love now than when Ephesians was written?
