Bible Book:
Deuteronomy

Then the Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun and said, 'Be strong and bold, for you shall bring the Israelites into the land that I promised them; I will be with you.' (v. 23)

Deuteronomy 31:23-28 Tuesday 22 November 2022

Psalm 115

Background

My late mother had a saying, "Circumstances may change but people don’t." The world around us may alter, there may be new scientific discoveries and greater insights into the world, but human nature remains unchanged.

When I read this part of Moses final work, I find that same sentiment echoed in his words to the people. The Law is now recorded. It has been placed beside the Ark of the Covenant and is to remain there as witness, a reminder, of the relationship that God offers to the people.

Moses realises how much his presence with the people has helped keep them on the straight and narrow with God but they still strayed frequently. How much more then, in his absence, will they do their own thing and forget the God who rescued them and led to a fruitful place of settlement and living?

As human being we may live in a very different world from that of Moses, with different experiences in life but we still have a tendency to be a ‘rebellious and stubborn (v. 27)  and continue to prefer to live life our way rather than God's.

To Ponder:

  • How much does your everyday life and living reflect the God you believe in?
  • Do you find it difficult to distinguish God's voice?

Prayer

Lord, in our rebellion and restlessness bring your peace and presence. Guide us to be your people in today's world. Amen.
