I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. (v. 2)

Isaiah 1:1-8 Monday 1 December 2025

Psalm 8

Background
The Old Testament prophet Isaiah begins with a startling image: God as a parent grieving over rebellious children. He paints a scene where heaven and earth are witnesses to the broken relationship between God and God’s people. Despite God’s care and provision, the people have turned away, ignoring their responsibilities under their covenant with God. The language is raw and emotional: God is not indifferent but deeply wounded by their neglect.

This passage reminds us that readiness for God’s coming at Christmas starts with honesty. Advent is not only about candles and carols; it is a season for truth-telling. Where have we wandered? What needs to change? Isaiah’s words echo through the centuries, calling us to examine our lives and communities. The imagery of a desolate land and ruined cities speaks to the consequences of turning from God’s ways: justice and mercy are not optional extras, but the foundation of life with God.

As we prepare for the gift of Christ, we begin by acknowledging what is broken. Confession is not about shame but about clearing space for God's grace to enter our lives. Like peeling away the packaging from a gift, we remove what obscures God’s love so that we can receive and share it freely.

To Ponder:

  • Where do you see signs of neglect or rebellion in your own life or in society?
  • How might confession be a gift – to yourself and to others?

Prayer
God of truth and mercy, open our eyes to what is broken in us and around us. Give us courage to return to you, and grace to live as your beloved children. Amen.
