Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (v. 1)
Background
I wonder when you were last tempted? Maybe you made a New Year’s resolution a few weeks ago and, by now, it is becoming seriously difficult to avoid the chocolate you have denied yourself! Or the gym membership you took out is beginning to become irksome and you’re sorely tempted to give it up.
I am reminded of the housekeeper in the comedy TV series 'Father Ted'. Mrs Doyle's catch phrase went something like this: "You’ll have another cup of tea?" And, firmly placing a cup and saucer in the unwilling hand, she was heard to say, "Arghh, go on, go on!" The recipient was not exactly giving in to temptation but neither were they having an easy way out of it!
Today we are presented with the temptation narrative in Matthew’s Gospel. It's far from the chocolate, the gym, or the cup of tea scenario.
Jesus’ wilderness experience is a reminder that testing is a very real part of spiritual life and growth. Jesus is led from a spiritual high to sudden temptation, targeted by the devil who makes a play for legitimate human needs. He says: "If you’re hungry, Jesus, turn these stones to bread; if you are really God, prove it by throwing yourself off the Temple roof and you will be saved; if you want to rule the world you can have it all if you worship me."
Humanly speaking, taken at face value, these offers might seem tempting – especially in the searing heat of the desert. But in trying to tempt Jesus – the man who was God inside – the devil had bitten off more than he could ever chew.
To the tempter who quotes Scripture, Jesus responds calmly quoting Scripture against each temptation. The Word of Life (Jesus) is quoting the word of life to the tempter who can offer nothing of substance.
Jesus resisted the devil's taunts and tempting, offering us an example to follow. He reminds his disciples, including you and me, that God strengthens those who trust and remain faithful in the face of all the world has to offer. The offer of eternal life in all its fullness remains stronger than any passing thing on earth.

‘Before the throne of God above’
To Ponder:
- What things are causing me to neglect or ignore God’s presence?
- How can I better rely on God’s word when facing struggles and temptations?
Prayer
Gracious God, thank you for the example of Jesus who remained faithful even in the wilderness of temptation. In the same way that he was led by your Spirit, help me to trust that you are with me in every trial I face. Amen.
