But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him. (v. 14)

2 Corinthians 2:12-17 Thursday 26 February 2026

Psalm 4

Background
The word highlighted for today in our daily lectionary is ‘share'. I read the passage with that word in mind and the word that stood out for me which I want to share is 'fragrance’. (v. 16)

Maybe you have a particular fragrance you like: the scent of a rose; the smell of your favourite meal; the fragrance of the perfume you wear – and by which you may be known!

In this verse, Paul speaks about the triumph of Christ and the unique role believers play in spreading his message. The metaphor of 'aroma' captures the essence of how we represent Christ in the world. This study invites us to explore what it means to be the 'aroma of Jesus' and how we can embody that in our daily lives.

Sharing the fragrance of knowledge
The aroma represents the fragrance of the knowledge of God. It signifies how the life of a believer can be a testament to God’s love and grace.

Spreading the fragrance always
The call to spread this fragrance 'everywhere' reminds us that we are not called to be Christian only in church settings but in all areas of life – our work, family and community. Who we are in fellowship of church should be no different from who we are in our everyday lives. The fragrance of the presence of Christ should always be perceivable in us.

Sharing the fragrance has a community impact
Think of a time when your actions or words had a positive impact on someone. How can you replicate that experience in your community to reflect the fragrance of Jesus, which includes hope, justice, peace, joy, including the outsider, and so much more?

2 Corinthians 2:14 highlights the privilege and responsibility of being the aroma of Christ. As we celebrate his triumph, let us commit to living in a way that spreads his knowledge and love, inviting others to experience the hope found in him.

Listen:
May the fragrance of Jesus fill this place

To Ponder:

  • In what ways does your life reflect the knowledge of God? How can you cultivate a more fragrant life that draws others to him?
  • Identify specific places or relationships where you can intentionally share the love of Christ. What actions or words can you use to spread this ‘aroma’ of God’s love for all?

Prayer
Loving God, thank you for the triumph we have in Christ. Help us to be bearers of your aroma in this world, reflecting your love and grace to everyone we encounter. May our lives draw others closer to you, and may we always seek to honour you in all we do and say. Amen.
