Therefore because of you Zion shall be ploughed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height. (v. 12)

Micah 3:5-12 Tuesday 12 August 2025

Psalm 25:11-22

Background
Micah continues to write in very critical terms, addressing false prophets who are speaking to the people of the day. They are promising prosperity in return for food and declaring war against those who are denying them food. They will experience darkness, unable to discern God's will.

In verses 8-12 Micah addresses the leaders of the house of Israel, calling out leaders who can be bribed and who take the Lord's support for granted. He says "Therefore because of you Zion shall be ploughed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.“ (v. 12)

Very harsh words are being given by the prophet here. We wait to see whether the people of Israel take note of what they are charged with, but as it stands it is not a good message. Indeed I believe there is a message here for the present day too.

To Ponder:

  • How do we relate to what Micah is writing here? Does his message apply just to the people of the time, or has Micah been given words that should resonate down the centuries and should be heeded today?
  • Where do we see the Holy Spirit at work in the words of Micah?

Prayer
We ask, Lord, that you will make sure your Holy Spirit is in action, not only in the world at large but in our own individual lives, so that we by living up to the commandments of love given to us through Jesus we can play our part in building your kingdom. Amen.
