Bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. (v. 13)

Isaiah 1:9-13 Tuesday 2 December 2025

Psalm 25

Background
Isaiah’s language here is fierce and uncompromising. God declares that the people’s worship has become abhorrent – a word usually reserved for pagan practices. The prophet speaks of the 'reek' of sacrifice, suggesting that what was meant to be fragrant has become offensive.

The problem is not the ceremonies themselves but the hearts behind them. Worship has become disconnected from justice and mercy. When rituals are hollow, they cease to glorify God and instead become a parody of devotion. Isaiah warns that even the most sacred practices can turn toxic if they mask injustice or perpetuate hypocrisy.

This is a sober message for the season of Advent. Our own traditions – candles, carols, services – are beautiful, but they can become empty if they do not lead us towards love and justice. True worship is never just about words or gestures; it is about aligning our lives with God’s purposes. When worship becomes self-serving or performative – if we are just 'going through the motions' – it risks becoming idolatrous: centred on us rather than on God.

As we prepare for Christ’s coming, Isaiah calls us to integrity. Let our worship overflow into action, so that what we offer is not a 'reek', but a 'fragrance of grace'.

To Ponder:

  • How can your worship this Advent lead to acts of justice and kindness?
  • In what ways might worship overflow into generosity, making your life a gift to others?

Prayer
Lord of justice and joy, make our worship sincere and our lives generous. May our praise lead us to love, and our prayers to peace. Amen.
