I do not mean to imply that we lord it over your faith; rather, we are workers with you for your joy, because you stand firm in the faith. (v. 24)
Background
Paul writes to the Corinthian church to explain his ministry as a leader and his relationship with them. Some questioned his authority, but Paul clarified that his leadership was not about control, but about partnership and faith.
True Christian leadership is not about control. Rather it enables the ministry of the whole people of God to use their God-given gifts and graces.
Faith is personal and so is testimony to faith in Christ. Whether a Christian leader or not, we are all called to behave in a Christian manner. As verse 12 says: "…we have behaved in the world with frankness and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God." We are thus to encourage faith in others by our example.
True Christ-like leadership walks with others "at the pace of love", to quote our President of Conference, the Revd Richard Andrew. We are called to carefully share in the story of another and support them in growing in Christ.
Our faith in Christ, individually, no matter how wavering or strong, is what helps us to walk on through all that life brings knowing that there are others – leaders, friends, ministers – walking our road with us in order that I [insert your own name here] may ‘stand firm in faith’. And when we flounder and fall, truly supportive leaders in Christ are there to listen and support, never to judge.
Listen:
To Ponder:
- When have you floundered in faith?
- In what ways did that affect you?
- What do you need to do today to know God’s presence and feel ‘firm in faith’?
Prayer
Loving God, in a world of shifting values and uncertain paths, help me to stand firm in my faith in you. Root me in your hope and give me your courage to live for Christ and remain faithful. Keep me anchored in your love and help me to show your love to others in all that I do, say, and am. Amen.
