My joy would be the joy of all of you. (v. 3)

2 Corinthians 2:1-11 Wednesday 25 February 2026

Psalm 3:1-6

Background
I wonder what comes to mind when you think of experiences that brought you joy? Take a moment to reflect before you read on.

For me, joy has often come as a result of sheer hard work and commitment,  or through sharing a journey of some kind which has been fruitful. And then there are the surprising, awesome moments that lead to a deep joy – a glorious sunset, or the surprise of an unexpected meeting with an old friend.

The word ‘joy’ appears in verse 3 of our Bible reading today, but to understand Paul’s meaning fully, the context is vital.

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians as a follow up to his earlier letter, 1 Corinthians, in which he addressed difficult issues within the church. There were divisions, immorality and spiritual pride to name a few. His earlier letter had caused some sorrow to the Corinthians Christians and it was necessary to offer some words of correction and hope.

In the verses before us today Paul explains that his intentions were never to grieve the Corinthians but rather to restore joy and fellowship.

Paul’s words are expressed to simple people, new to the Christian faith, and Paul appeals to them in words rooted in a genuine care with love. No matter who we are, there is a common language which is completely understandable. No words are needed, just genuine actions from a genuine heart, and that language is love. The Bible constantly reverberates with that language and we see, hear and understand it most deeply in Jesus, the one to whom Paul defers and to whom his letters lead us.

In these words of Paul to the Corinthians, "my joy would be the joy of all of you" ((verse 3), we find difficulties in relationships can be resolved through love, resulting in joy.

To Ponder:

  • Where do I see joy around me?
  • Where am I called to offer love today?

Prayer
Lord, help me to love others enough to speak the truth with gentleness and receive correction with grace. May my life bring joy, encouragement and love to those around me, reflecting the love and hope I find in you. In the name of Jesus, the king of love, Amen.
