25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Readings are laid out as for the continuous form of the lectionary. Alternative related readings (OT and psalm only) are below. Hymns marked with an asterisk (*) are suggested for more than one reading.

Peace Sunday is usually marked on the Sunday before or after the United Nations International Day of Peace (21 September). The World Council of Churches calls on churches to make this a day of prayer for peace, and to include prayers for peace in their services on the Sunday before or following. Resources are available at www.for.org.uk/peacesunday. Also see JPIT’s materials around Peacemaking

Remembering the death of Alan Gaunt, earlier this year, Peace Sunday would be a good day to revisit his classic hymn: We pray for peace (StF 719), with its concluding note of certainty:

God, give us peace…
With you to lead us on,
through death or tumult, peace will come.
