This Christmas, John Wesley’s New Room in Bristol invites visitors to step into a festive sanctuary steeped in history, reflection and community spirit. Nestled in the heart of the city, the world’s oldest Methodist building is offering a seasonal experience that blends tradition with tranquility.
The chapel becomes a haven for those seeking a quieter, more meaningful way to celebrate the season. Families and visitors can enjoy a range of free festive activities, including a special trail inspired by Charles Wesley’s iconic hymn Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Children can explore the chapel’s rich heritage while engaging with the story behind one of the most beloved Christmas carols.
New this year is a dedicated wellness and mindfulness area – an oasis of calm just steps away from the bustling Christmas market. Whether you're looking to pause for a moment of peace or simply soak in the atmosphere of this historic space, the New Room offers a welcome retreat from the seasonal rush.

Marie Sellars, Community and Learning Officer, sees the season as a perfect opportunity to welcome new faces: “For many, this will be their first visit to John Wesley’s New Room. It’s a chance to discover an internationally significant heritage site while enjoying the warmth and joy of the season.”
As part of its Christmas offering, the New Room is also hosting a Cards for Good Causes pop-up shop, open Monday to Saturday until 17 December from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Visitors can browse a wide selection of Christmas cards, gift tags and wrapping paper, with proceeds supporting a variety of UK charities. The initiative aligns with the chapel’s long-standing commitment to social good and community service.
Robert Devonald, Marketing and Communications Officer, reflects on the building’s enduring mission: “We’re always looking for ways to bring people into our beautiful space and share a message of love and hope. Christmas is a time when that message resonates more than ever.”
With over 250 years of history as a place of gathering and giving, John Wesley’s New Room continues to offer a Christmas experience that’s both heartfelt and inspiring – reminding us all of the joy in doing good and the beauty of coming together.
