Do you see persons wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for fools than for them. (v. 12)
Background
Today’s passage from Proverbs begins by asking, “Do you see persons wise in their own eyes?” It goes on to highlight the execrable behaviour of the lazy person. It teaches that the lazy believe themselves wiser than others and they refuse to work, to serve, or to receive sensible advice. Instead, they idle, wander and meddle, quarrelling to pass the time.
But in our contemporary world, I wonder if lazy people deliberately choose these behaviours. What truly causes someone to become lazy? Is it foolishness, self-righteousness, pride, or something deeper?
A friend of mine has a daughter who looks gorgeous but is quite petite. When she was nine, people often thought she was only five or six. I recall outings where she was eager at the outset, but once we started, she stayed on the sidelines. When asked why, she replied, “I don’t like the activity. I’m tired.”
Later, her mother shared that her daughter was actually afraid of failing. Her small physique made her feel insecure, not good enough or strong enough to participate.
Psychologically, fear of failure or feelings of worthlessness can cause people to act in unexpected ways. Fear of failure often leads to avoidance behaviours such as procrastination. Or it can make people compensate and become overly perfectionist. Both behaviours arise from deep insecurities and self-doubt.
Scripture encourages self-examination. We are encouraged to recognise these struggles within ourselves. We are also warned against judging others hastily for apparent laziness. Instead, we are called to show compassion, helping ourselves and others to realise our true worth as beloved children of God, created for a greater purpose.
To Ponder:
- In your life, have there been times when fear or feelings of inadequacy made you avoid something or procrastinate?
- Do you find yourself judging others for being lazy or quarrelsome? What might be behind their behaviour?
Prayer
Merciful God, if we see ourselves as more than we truly are, forgive and humble us. If we see ourselves as less than your creation, forgive and restore us to your path of light and hope. Amen.
