Bible Book:
Song of Solomon

O that you were like a brother to me. (v. 1)

Song of Solomon 8:1-4 Friday 27 March 2026

Psalm 126

Background
The Song of Solomon does not read like a romantic novel; it doesn’t resolve into a happy ending. Its poetic lines are fragmentary, with a bewildering variety of metaphors and word-pictures. We are never completely sure what is (or is not) happening. In this passage there is a sense of frustrated desire, of social rules and conventions standing in the way of achieving what is urgently wanted. One commentator talks about this as ‘the power and politics of love’.

For many, this is true to their life experience: things do not work out as hoped or anticipated. It is hard to bring together all the contrasting aspects of life and make sense of them. Perhaps this passage points to the way in which faith can enable us to hold on, in spite of frustrations, and to hand over to God the task of bringing completion and sense to our lives.

To Ponder:

  • Think about the contradictions, disappointments and the unfinished business of your life. What helps you to be at peace with the things you can’t control?

Prayer
Loving God, out of the tangled knots of our lives you weave a seamless robe of hope. All our journeys find their meaning and end in you. Grant us your peace. Amen.
