He subdues the ancient gods, shatters the forces of old. (v. 27a)
Background
In these chapters of the book of Deuteronomy Moses has been making sure things end well. It can seem a long goodbye and feel like, is this ending ever going to truly take place? But Moses is ensuring that he completes all the tasks he needs to before his death.
These verses are taken from the blessing which he gives to the different tribes of Israel. It describes the unparalleled power of God and the security of the people of Israel, stating that God rides through the heavens to help his people, subdues ancient gods, and drives out enemies.
Today's verses are spoken to the tribe of Asher. Moses is reminding them that, whatever happens, God is their refuge. 'Jeshurun' in verse 26 is a poetic name for Israel, derived from the Hebrew word meaning 'upright' or 'straight'.
This blessing contains an element of prophecy as well. It is saying that God will always be with the people and they will be held by God. In the New International Version of the Bible verse 27 reads: "The eternal God is your refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms." It conveys the idea of God cradling and wanting to protect us all.
To Ponder:
- What does it mean to you to know that God is your refuge and you can totally depend upon God?
- How does the idea of such an intimate and close God feel to you?
