Acts

'Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son.' (v. 28)

Acts 20:25-28 Saturday 27 May 2023

Psalm 52

Background

Paul continued his farewell speech to the Ephesian elders who have travelled to Miletus to be with him. The poignancy and power of Paul's words are amplified by the opening phrase of today's passage. "And now I know that none of you ….will ever see my face again" (v. 25). Paul expected trouble to await him in Jerusalem (v. 23), and Rome (Acts 27 and 28). Knowing that this was the last time Paul would be with these trusted partners in the gospel, we can imagine that he chose his words carefully, turning them over in his mind before finally expressing what he needed to say.

He looked back on his ministry and declared that his conscience as an evangelist was clear. (v. 26) Then anticipating the trials and troubles coming, not just for him, but also to those left behind to lead the young church, in verse 28 he gave his final charge. The first priority is to keep watch over themselves and secondly over all the flock. t is not possible to care properly for others (spiritually, emotionally, physically), if we do not first care for ourselves. This is not to encourage an unhealthy self-centredness of course, but it is to acknowledge that we will serve others best if we also pay attention to our own needs and well-being. In the context of this passage, this instruction applies to Christian ministry, but it is equally valid in any other form of service.

I had a time with the Ambulance Service in London. I recall my Service driving instructor trying to instil much needed wisdom into us new, over-enthusiastic, blue-light recruits. "Make measured progress" she said, "But always drive carefully. You cannot help anyone if you crash the ambulance before you get there." It has been a learning point to which I have not always paid proper heed in in my life. But my sense is that Paul was trying to say something similar. Pay attention to your own needs, because then you will best be able to care for the needs of others.

To Ponder:

  • How can you ‘keep watch’ over your own spiritual, emotional and physical well-being today?
  • If you were to say ‘goodbye’ to yourself for the last time today, what would your final message be?
  • Think back and recall one person who has been significant in shaping the person you are today. Give thanks for them.

Prayer

Loving God, I want to thank you for those you have given me as partners in service, ministry and living. As I call them to mind now, I give thanks particularly for those moments when I have recognised your grace, forgiveness, covenant-love and kindness in their lives and actions. May I reflect your character in my life and service. Amen.
