Like a maniac who shoots deadly firebrands and arrows, so is one who deceives a neighbour and says, “I am only joking!” (vs 18-19)
Background
Proverbs, flowing from divine wisdom, are like a double-edged sword, piercing through both our fantasies and realities. They judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Today’s passage continues yesterday’s theme, focusing on lazy people who refuse to humble themselves and listen to wise counsel. In life, they often cause chaos by deceiving, whispering, gossiping and using sweet talk that breaks down trust in neighbourhoods and communities.
Their actions are likened to a manic (v. 18) who shoots flaming arrows, and a smooth glaze (v. 23) that covers worthless pottery, both of them fanning quarrels and strife. The discord is not just verbal. It corrupts their inner being and nourishes an evil heart.
As Christians, this may seem distant. Yet, it is beneficial to apply in our faith. The Book of Proverbs is traditionally ascribed to King Solomon and his short, clever sayings expose this reality and invite us to make wise choices. All in all, love is a choice. God has chosen to love us with his unfailing love in and through the person of Jesus. May we turn to him to fill our hearts with love, to tame our tongues for good, and to overcome evil with grace. That being so, we may live true virtues, building up one another in a broken world that's desperate for love and trust.
To Ponder:
- Consider your last quarrel. How did you feel? Often, we respond by talking back, speaking louder, or blaming past wrongs to silence others. In hindsight, is there anything you could have done differently?
- Is there someone in your life you are trying to build up?
Prayer
Loving and gracious God, we thank you for your wisdom spoken through your servant King Solomon and the ancient sages. Humble us to acknowledge our nothingness when we part from you. By your grace and love, do not withhold your wisdom. Teach us to learn from Proverbs to revere and honour you. Help us dedicate our lives to live out our Christian faith consistently, building up one another, as Christ does. Amen.
