Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (v. 17)

2 Corinthians 3:12-18 Saturday 28 February 2026

Psalm 6:1-9

Background
Today we are considering what true freedom is like. I wonder whether you have ever been invited or challenged to do something that the person asking knows would be contrary to your natural instincts. They might say: "Go on, do a dance. Just free yourself up and give it a go." That really would not be something I'd want to do. I find any notion of dancing in front of others embarrassing and far from freeing.

St Paul turns his attention to true freedom in the passage before us today. He addresses the church in Corinth, reflecting on the contrast between the old covenant of the Hebrew Law and the new covenant through Christ (verses 13-16) emphasising the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, which brings true freedom to believers. Paul identifies that this is not merely the absence of restrictions but is found in a relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. This freedom is spiritual and transcends human definitions of liberty. It is also linked to the ability to live in accordance with God's will, leading to a life that reflects God's glory. Paul tells the reader that the Holy Spirit is the agent of transformation, empowering believers to live righteously and to experience fullness of life in Christ.

Where the Holy Spirit dwells, Christian believers are freed from the bondage of sin, guilt and the law. They can serve God freely and joyfully and follow a life of service rather than self-indulgence. As believers, we are called to use our freedom to love and serve others (Galatians 5:13).

This freedom also means that we are no longer defined by our past failures but are made new creations (as defined by Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:17).

I wonder how, as a community of believers, we can support one another in experiencing and living out this freedom? What steps can we take to share this message with those around us who may be feeling trapped or burdened?

2 Corinthians 3:17 invites us into a deeper understanding of what it means to be free in Christ. As we align ourselves with the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to live out this freedom which impacts both our lives and those of the people around us.

Freedom is coming’ sung by Ruth and Joy Everingham.

To Ponder:

  • Reflect on a time when you felt truly free. What circumstances contributed to that feeling?
  • How does understanding freedom in the context of the Holy Spirit change your perspective on personal challenges and struggles?
  • In what areas of your life do you need to invite the Holy Spirit to bring freedom?

Prayer
Gracious God, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the freedom that comes through Jesus. Help me to embrace your freedom in our lives and help me to reflect your glory. May I use the freedom I find in Christ to serve others and to spread your hope and love. Amen.
