On that very day the Lord addressed Moses as follows: “Ascend this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho, and view the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites for a possession; you shall die there on the mountain that you ascend and shall be gathered to your kin, as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his kin." (vs 48-50)

Deuteronomy 32:44-52 Thursday 27 November 2025

Psalm 117

Background
Moses is given a glimpse into the future as he goes to die. He is told to climb the mountain and look at the Promised Land Joshua will lead his people into. This is the 'final curtain', as put in the song 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra or by the Sex Pistols – depending on which version you prefer.

It is a moment that is full of drama: we can imagine it as the end of a film. Moses hears the Lord's command, climbs the mountain and then dies. The film would probably cut there, before his community go to gather the body, and it would fade out as the music sounds.

In verses 51-52 God explains why Moses and his brother Aaron will not be allowed to enter the Promised Land. They 'broke faith' and failed to maintain God's holiness in front of the Israelites at the waters of Meribath-kadesh in the Desert of Zin. This refers to an incident in Numbers 20:2-13 where they struck a rock instead of speaking to it, as God commanded, and did not honour God's holiness.

Moses was an old man. Climbing a mountain would not have been quick or easy, but he would have been determined to fulfil the task. What the Lord is doing with this last instruction to Moses is making clear that he can die at peace, knowing that it was all worth it and there will be a next chapter.

To Ponder:

  • If you have been involved in either lay or ordained ministry, what would you like God to show you before you die?
  • As you get older, what would give you peace of mind and make you feel that believing in God has all been worthwhile?
