Comment on the Archbishop of Canterbury
Upon the announcement that the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, is to retire later this year, the Secretary of the Methodist Conference, Rev Nigel Collinson, made the following comment:
"We are grateful for the lead which Archbishop Carey has given both in the mission of the church in our time and in his commitment to the unity of the church. He has forged links also between the Anglican Communion and the General Conference of the United Methodist Church. We shall hold the Church of England in our prayers in the search for his successor in this most demanding of posts. The person appointed will profoundly affect the relationship of our two churches.
