Comment on the Archbishop of Canterbury

Upon the announcement that the Archbishop of Canterbury, DrGeorge Carey, is to retire later this year, the Secretary of theMethodist Conference, Rev Nigel Collinson, made the followingcomment:

"We are grateful for the lead which Archbishop Carey has givenboth in the mission of the church in our time and in his commitmentto the unity of the church. He has forged links also between theAnglican Communion and the General Conference of the UnitedMethodist Church. We shall hold the Church of England in ourprayers in the search for his successor in this most demanding ofposts. The person appointed will profoundly affect the relationshipof our two churches.
