Revd Dr Inderjit Bhogal, one of the founders of the Sanctuary movement, has responded to the violent disorder that took place at a council meeting in Kent last week during a debate for Swale Borough to become a District of Sanctuary.
Opponents target City of Sanctuary work. I understand differences of opinions. I welcome respectful conversation. There is no need for the exercise of hateful and hurtful violence to express opposition.
We can together create a better world for everyone.
The aim of City of Sanctuary is to encourage individuals and organisations, representing a breadth of engagement, to work together to build cultures of welcome and protective hospitality for all vulnerable people, especially those displaced by war and violence seeking sanctuary in our local communities.
When we work together, and include all sectors of community we can all contribute and build respectful relationships, for the benefit of everyone.
Hatred is like sand, nothing of lasting value can be built on it.
Bring people together to work together for the welfare of everyone. Don’t challenge hospitality with hostility. Challenge hostility with hospitality.
Build safety for everyone.
