LEGO show at Methodist Church attracts thousands

A Methodist church has made a massive £10,000 and attracted more than 26,000 visitors to its annual LEGO exhibition.

The increasingly popular event saw a surge in visitor numbers as a total of 26,434 flocked through the doors of St John’s Methodist Church in Llandudno – compared to last year’s total of around 17,000.

A newly built two-metre fir tree was the centrepiece of the exhibition, Wales’ largest, privately-owned collection of LEGO. Entry was free, but delighted spectators were happy to leave thousands of pounds in donations to the church.

They marvelled at the variety and detail of the models – and the sheer number of them.

Hosted from 7 to 31 August, the theme for this year was ‘Care for Creation’ and the exhibition featured favourite models from previous years, including the giant panda, the four-foot eagle, the goat and Mickey Mouse.

Visitors were also invited to build a LEGO tower and sponsor a brick to help support restoration work on the church tower costing over £300,000.

Around 300 prayers were also left on the prayer tree.

The Revd James Garnett of St John’s Methodist Church, Llandudno said: “It was great hearing from many of the visitors about how the exhibition had inspired them. 

“I am grateful for the generosity involved in sharing both the LEGO models and the church building as well as for the generous response – through donations as well as from all whose volunteering made the event possible.”

St John’s Methodist Church is hosting a heritage morning on 25 September from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The free event showcases the repair and conservation work being carried out on the church’s pinnacles and buttresses.
